Shapes of Bauhaus: Celebrating the Work of Alma Siedhoff-Buscher

We are excited to announce the newest product in our Shapes Of series: Shapes of Bauhaus! Shapes of Bauhaus was inspired by the work of Alma Siedhoff-Buscher who studied at the Staatliches Bauhaus school in Weimar in the early 20th Century. During her first few years at Staatliches Bauhaus she was the only woman working in the furniture design workshop where she created groundbreaking toy and furniture designs. Some of her most famous designs were her innovative children’s toys which she created based on research about children’s education at the time. Her designs feature the bright, primary colors characteristic of the work of many Bauhaus artists incorporated into beautiful designs for toys and furniture which inspire creativity.

One of Alma Siedhoff-Buscher’s most well known works was Kleine Schiffbauspiel, or Small Ship-Building Gamewhich she created in 1923. This game was composed of 22 pieces which fit together to create a ship but could also be rearranged in an endless number of ways. Alma Siedhoff-Busher’s work is both practical and functional, but also limitlessly creative, allowing for a toy that could be produced at a mass-scale but also encouraged innovative thinking and design. Siedhoff-Buscher’s designs also employ many artistic principles of the Bauhaus movement, including the use of geometric shapes and bright primary colors, bringing the principles of Bauhaus painting to life in an interactive and boundless form.
